A federal judge will speak at the unveiling of the Kickapoo Tribe's new Judicial and Law Enforcement Center next month.
Deanell Reece Tacha was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in December 1985, where she currently serves as a federal appellate judge. Tacha served as Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit from 2001 to 2007.
The new facility will house the Kickapoo Tribal Court, tribal court support staff, the tribal Police Department, tribal Social Services and the Child Support Enforcement Program.
The open house will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 at the facility on the Kickapoo Reservation. The public is invited to the open house.
The Kickapoo Tribal Council approved the Kickapoo Nation Tribal Codes of Law in 1990 and established the court facility in renovated space in the Tribe's commercial complex. The court has both civil and criminal jurisdiction enumerated in the Kickapoo Nation Tribal Code.
Tribal Chairman Steve Cadue said the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center is a momentous milestone for the Tribe as law and order is critical to the present and future Kickapoo Indian Self-Determination goals of the Kickapoo people.
